Iarnród Éireann, part of the CIE Group, is hiring a suitably qualified and experienced Medical Officer to join its Occupational Health Unit – a shared service supporting Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail, Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann, and CIE Holding Company.
This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of clinical practice, regulation, and public safety in a national transport network. If you’re a Specialist Registrar (SpR) or qualified Occupational Physician, we want to hear from you. This role offers real purpose, challenge, and growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct pre-employment and occupational health assessments and monitor fitness for work, especially for staff in safety-critical role
- Provide medical advice on Ill Health Retirement, workplace accommodations, and absence management
- Act as or train to become a Medical Review Officer for Drug & Alcohol testingEnsure compliance with the Railway Safety Act 2005 and occupational health regulations
- Collaborate with GPs, HR, and internal stakeholders on clinical case management and return-to-work planning
- Maintain professional standards through ongoing CPD and adherence to IMC registration requirements
Required Competencies
- Strong understanding of occupational health legislation and safety standards
- Excellent clinical judgment and ability to assess complex medical cases
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills with multiple stakeholders
- Proficiency in using clinical and administrative IT systems
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
Essential:
- Medical degree and Irish Medical Council registration
- At least 5 years post-registration clinical experience
- Postgraduate qualification or Specialist Registrar training in Occupational Medicine
- Working knowledge of occupational health law and workplace safety
- Strong interpersonal, clinical judgment, and IT skills
Desirable:
- Membership of ICGP or RCPI
- Certificate in Traffic Medicine (RCPI)
- Experience in transport, safety-critical, or industrial OH environments
- MRO experience (or willingness to train).
