Environmental and Sustainability Manager, Capital Investments (CI) – Iarnród Éireann

Location - Inchicore Dublin 8.
Salary - Ungraded Executive Level 4B
(€83,045 - €86,323 on a 3-year scale)

Role and Purpose

Iarnród Éireann has very significant Sustainability and Environmental obligations towards achieving key national targets including legislative requirements to achieve climate targets, circular economy targets, implement green procurement practices, national biodiversity goals and disclose company information related to sustainability. For the Capital Investments Division this is particularly important as we embark on a very ambitious growth and renewal programme across all aspects of the railway nationally.

The role of the CI Environmental and Sustainability Manager is to provide leadership across this sphere to ensure the development and achievement of the environmental and sustainability objectives within the ambitious programme of works CI is responsible for in improving and upgrading railway services in Ireland, and to also ensure compliance with the new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) to become Irish law in 2024, in conjunction with other departments within Iarnród Éireann.

Key Responsibilities

Managing Environmental and Sustainability Elements of Programmes and Delivery

  • Overseeing the development of the environmental improvement strategy and associated work programmes in CI
  • Taking a lead role on the development of sustainability objectives for both CI holistically and CI programmes/projects
  • Creating working groups with Finance and HR and Project Management teams to develop data reporting systems for compliance to the CSRD

Addressing External Obligations

  • Ensuring compliance with all applicable environment related legislation
  • Responding to external requests for information from general public, local authorities and other governing bodies in relation to environmental and sustainability issues on projects and programmes CI deliver
  • Providing CI performance reports on sustainability progress for input into external reports required by new EU and Ireland legislation (ex. CPD and TCFD)
  • Assisting the IÉ Sustainability Team in meeting IÉ and CIÉ mandatory compliance of the 'Climate Action Framework for the Commercial Semi-State Sector'

Managing CI Environmental Team

  • Overseeing the CI Environmental Team who will be assisting with monitoring and reporting on the performance of the environmental management systems within CI. Overseeing the CI Environmental and Sustainability Team across all elements of CI delivery and support services.

Internal Collaborations

  • Advising the Director CI and Assistant Director Design Development on environmental risks that are to be reported on the company risk register and offer advice on mitigation measures
  • Engaging throughout the various business units for the implementation of environmental and sustainability objectives, for example working with the Marketing and Corporate Communications teams to provide awareness publications and campaigns

Day to Day Tasks

  • Attend reoccurring meetings with internal and external stakeholders, department heads and various team leads
  • Providing reports on the CI environmental and sustainability performance to internal and external stakeholders

Qualifications

Essential

  • Minimum Level 8 Degree in Environmental or similar related discipline
  • Detailed knowledge of national and EU Environmental legislation and policy
  • Knowledge of Environmental Management Systems
  • Experience in an Environmental and/or Sustainability management role (min 10 years)

Desirable

  • Experience and/or knowledge of environmental aspects and impacts within a railway/transport environment
  • Experience in developing, maintaining and analysing environmental and sustainability data management systems
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, engage with and drive new initiatives / improvement programmes for environmental and sustainability management
  • Membership of CIEEM or another similar environmental science related body
